In this lesson we’re going to continue with our layered coordination study.

We’re going to work with another SD pattern, memorize it, put some HH patterns on top of it, and then add some BD patterns.

1 - The Funky Beat, p. 10, ex. 12 & 13

A) Play 8ths, on the HH plus SD pattern from Ex. 12, p. 10.

B) Play 8ths, on the HH plus SD pattern from Ex. 12, p. 10 plus
BD pattern 1 and then play using a 4 bar phrase.

2 - Transcription 1a.png

The BD patterns are not the same as any of the BD patterns on p. 11 as you will see in the transcriptions.

C) Play one 8th, two 16ths on the HH plus BD pattern 1 using a 4 bar phrase. Start with Ex. 13, p. 10.

NOTE: I purposely did not write out these exercises with the one 8th, two 16ths HH pattern because the idea is to do this in your head without relying on written notation.

Notice that the HH opening in the second bar of the 4-bar phrase falls on the “a of 4.”

2 – Adding Bass Drum pattern 2

A) Play 8ths, on the HH plus SD pattern from Ex. 12, p. 10 plus
BD pattern 2 and then play using a 4 bar phrase.

4 - Transcription 2.png

B) Play the same 4 bar phrase using one 8th, two 16ths on the HH plus BD pattern 2.

Notice that the HH opening in the second bar of the 4-bar phrase falls on the “a of 4.”

3 - “What is Hip?” intro

Check the transcription for the intro to “What Is Hip?,” Tower Of Power, on p. 35 of The Funky Beat to see how this type of coordination is used.
